God’s Promises (Isaiah 65:17~25)
17 "Behold, I will create new heavens and a new earth. The former things will not be remembered, nor will they come to mind.
18 But be glad and rejoice forever in what I will create, for I will create Jerusalem to be a delight and its people a joy.
19 I will rejoice over Jerusalem and take delight in my people; the sound of weeping and of crying will be heard in it no more.
20 "Never again will there be in it an infant who lives but a few days, or an old man who does not live out his years; he who dies at a hundred will be thought a mere youth; he who fails to reach a hundred will be considered accursed.
21 They will build houses and dwell in them; they will plant vineyards and eat their fruit.
22 No longer will they build houses and others live in them, or plant and others eat. For as the days of a tree, so will be the days of my people; my chosen ones will long enjoy the works of their hands.
23 They will not toil in vain or bear children doomed to misfortune; for they will be a people blessed by the LORD, they and their descendants with them.
24 Before they call I will answer; while they are still speaking I will hear.
25 The wolf and the lamb will feed together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox, but dust will be the serpent's food. They will neither harm nor destroy on all my holy mountain," says the LORD.
New Heavens and a New Earth (65:17–20)
In this passage, God promises to create new heavens and a new earth where suffering will become a thing of the past and there will be no more weeping. This promise pertains to the restoration of the nation of Israel. By granting this vision to His people, God gives them hope that will carry them through the difficulties of captivity under the Babylonians. The Israelites will look to this promise knowing that the situation they face is not permanent and their God is mighty and faithful to restore them. This is fulfilled when the Israelites are set free from captivity and return home to Jerusalem. But this promise will ultimately be fulfilled when Christ returns in glory and establishes His kingdom. As His people, we too have the same hope for complete restoration.
- How righteous are your words and deeds? How can you reflect more of the righteousness of Christ to others?
Perfect Restoration (65:21–25)
With the new heavens and new earth will come a new order. God will bring perfect restoration which will establish peace and harmony, permeating every aspect of creation. Workers will be able to enjoy the fruit of their labor without fear of exploitation or confiscation from the enemy. The people and their descendants will be blessed by the LORD, and there will even be peace between former predator and prey—the wolf and the lamb will feed together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox. God is our King who reigns in perfect love and glory, restoring His kingdom through His chosen people, promising to restore all who call upon His name.
- What areas of the world still need His peace and restoration? How can you help to bring this peace until perfect restoration is established?
A letter to God
Father, thank you so much for Your eternal promises of restoration. Help me to live today with Your hope and with an eternal perspective. May Your kingdom come quickly. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
