44 It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon,
45 for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two.
46 Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” When he had said this, he breathed his last.
47 The centurion, seeing what had happened, praised God and said, “Surely this was a righteous man.”
48 When all the people who had gathered to witness this sight saw what took place, they beat their breasts and went away.
49 But all those who knew him, including the women who had followed him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things.
50 Now there was a man named Joseph, a member of the Council, a good and upright man,
51 who had not consented to their decision and action. He came from the Judean town of Arimathea, and he himself was waiting for the kingdom of God.
52 Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus’ body.
53 Then he took it down, wrapped it in linen cloth and placed it in a tomb cut in the rock, one in which no one had yet been laid.
54 It was Preparation Day, and the Sabbath was about to begin.
55 The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee followed Joseph and saw the tomb and how his body was laid in it.
56 Then they went home and prepared spices and perfumes. But they rested on the Sabbath in obedience to the commandment.

Reflection

The Final Hours (23:44–49)
The suffering and death of Jesus triggers supernatural events. When the sun should be shining most brightly, there is complete darkness. The curtain of the temple, which separates the people from the Most Holy Place, is torn in two. Against this background, Jesus commits His spirit to the Father and breathes His final breath. Because Jesus endured the Father’s judgment, we can freely enter into the presence of God. Let us draw near to Him with full confidence, knowing that we are covered by the redeeming blood of Christ. He paid the full price of restoring our relationship with God. Therefore, let us respond like the centurion, praising God and acknowledging the righteousness of Jesus.

- What hinders you from drawing closer to God? What has changed in your life after your relationship with God was restored?

Using Power for Good (23:50–56)
While many teachers of the law are blind to the true identity of Jesus, there is a good and upright man called Joseph of Arimathea who did not agree with the other members of the Council who opposed Jesus. Joseph utilizes his influence to receive Jesus’ body and give Him an expensive burial. Joseph’s example reminds us that our influence and wealth are not merely to be enjoyed. Such blessings should be used to build the kingdom of God rather than our own personal kingdoms. Like Joseph and the women who made preparations for Jesus’ burial, we should be unafraid to go against the grain, obeying God even when there is pressure to do otherwise.

- In what spheres of your life are you most influential? How can you use your gifts and blessings to build up the kingdom of God?

A letter to God

Dear God, I praise You, for when there was no way, You made a way for me. I surrender to You, seeking daily to draw closer to You and to build Your kingdom. May I never take Jesus’ finished work for granted. In His name, amen.
