Humble Hearts of Obedience (Psalm 50:16~23)
16 But to the wicked, God says: "What right have you to recite my laws or take my covenant on your lips?
17 You hate my instruction and cast my words behind you.
18 When you see a thief, you join with him; you throw in your lot with adulterers.
19 You use your mouth for evil and harness your tongue to deceit.
20 You speak continually against your brother and slander your own mother's son.
21 These things you have done and I kept silent; you thought I was altogether like you. But I will rebuke you and accuse you to your face.
22 "Consider this, you who forget God, or I will tear you to pieces, with none to rescue:
23 He who sacrifices thank offerings honors me, and he prepares the way so that I may show him the salvation of God."
Walk the Walk (50:16–20)
The wicked described in these verses know God’s laws, yet they refuse to obey His commands. They ignore God and choose to live in sin. But God sees everything. He sees past the outer veneer of godliness and judges our hearts. He does not want us to simply accumulate knowledge about Him; He wants us to have a relationship with Him and to walk in His ways. In His grace, He gives us everything we need to live a life of obedience that is pleasing to Him. With every act of obedience, however small it may seem in our eyes, we bring joy to God’s heart and experience His abundant blessings as well.
- Ask God to reveal any times you encouraged others to walk in His ways but were unwilling to walk in obedience yourself. Repent and ask God to empower you to obey His commands.
Altogether Other (50:21–23)
God is infinitely wise, completely pure, and altogether beautiful. He has never been tainted by sin or defiled by evil. He does not need us, yet He has chosen to be in relationship with us. Not only that, but because of His Son, we are made one with Him in spirit! Yet, if we view God’s willingness to become one with us as a sign that He is just like us, we are sorely mistaken. His decision to commune with His imperfect creation does not in any way take away from His holiness and splendor. May we see God for who He is and realize what a privilege it is to be united with Him.
- What are some words that come to mind when you reflect on God’s character? How have you personally experienced those attributes of God in your life?
A letter to God
Thank you Lord that Your ways are not my ways. Thank you that they are higher and better than mine. Thank you for entering my world and revealing Yourself to me. Please teach me and empower me to live a life pleasing to You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
